Mentoring, as distinct from coaching, focuses on the development of the
individual rather than the set of competencies that they need to do
their job.
Mentoring is a
skill in itself, and is not innate. Giving a person a role as a mentor
should always be supplemented by helping them to develop the required
competencies.
